Writing on different shapes


 
To demonstrate that different people use different shapes to write on so that the contents are recognisable.
Pictures of different shaped cuneiform tablets, modern book with writing e.g. exercise book, telephone directory.
Class discussion / individual work

 

Remind the pupils that the people of Mesopotamia used different shaped clay tablets to record different types of information, such as prisms, tablets and cylinders. Ask the class to think about why this is useful.

Show the class the modern examples. Ask the pupils to look around the classroom and find different objects with writing on. Ask each pupil to draw up a table with the range of objects and shapes.
