The Time chapter illustrates the rise and fall of Mesopotamia's linked civilizations, and how knowledge of these has been recovered through archaeology.

The home page introduces the ideas of change through time and how these can be recognised in Mesopotamia.

The story explains how our knowledge of Mesopotamia has changed through time. It includes information which allows comparisons between modern techniques of archaeology and those used a century ago. It may be used to show pupils how ideas about the past can change as new information is revealed.

The explore section consists of six different time lines. The main time line highlights events, people and accomplishments in the history of the whole of Mesopotamia. This is developed further in time lines devoted to Sumerian culture, Babylonia, and Assyria. The remaining time lines follow the development of writing and ziggurats. This section can be used to look at change and continuity in Mesopotamia over time, as well as the duration of the various civilisations of Mesopotamia.

‘Tell Archaeology' offers pupils an opportunity to discover how an ancient site is formed and then excavated by putting objects in order from oldest to youngest.
