The Warfare chapter allows pupils to explore the detail of warfare: sieges, weapons and fortifications, through which the Assyrians dominated the ancient Near East.

The home page explains that the Assyrians created a vast empire as the result of warfare.

The story tells how an Assyrian king, Sennacherib, attacked and defeated a city called Lachish. It uses images of wall reliefs from Sennacherib's palace which present the same story. This section could be used to explore why empires are built and what is involved in a military campaign.

The explore allows pupils to investigate details on an Assyrian wall relief depicting warfare. This could be used to examine the use of wall decoration or for pupils to gather information about different Assyrian weapons, fortifications and armour.

The challenge is designed to show that often only parts of ancient objects, such as weapons, survive in the soil. The pupils have to match reconstructions with the actual remains using clues. They will need to consider why certain parts have survived better than others.
