In the mid twentieth century, excavation continued in Iraq where a site called Eridu was explored by the archaeologists Seton Lloyd and Fuad Safar.

They discovered the remains of several temples, built on top of each other over hundreds of years.

Because the pottery they found in the buildings was different over the time the temples were built they used it to compare with pottery from other sites and constructed a chronology.
