The caravan camps for the night. As the sun rises you look out across the wide plantations of date palms. It is harvest time and workers are already stripping the branches of dates from the trees.

You watch while men and women cut the date-filled branches using long poles with curved knives at the end. The branches fall onto cloths under the trees, the corners of which are held by children. When the cloths are filled with branches they are laid out and the dates are removed and put into baskets. Soon you help to cut the branches and carry the heavy baskets of dates to a waiting cart. The dates will be taken to the temple in Sippar to be made into wine.
