The villagers show you where they collect the bitumen. It oozes slowly out of the ground where it hardens. The sun's heat keeps much of it sticky. Chunks are collected on mats. These are put into bowls over a fire. When the bitumen has melted and it is thick and sticky, sand or chopped up pieces of plants are added to make it stronger. It is then poured onto the floor or into moulds where it hardens again. Melted bitumen is used to make boats or houses waterproof.

Do you help with waterproofing a boat or a house?
